Best Wild West Game for PC and Console – Part 1
Part 1 – In the 17th to 20th centuries, the United States became silent witness of the expansion of territories and conflicts between Indian tribes and the expansion of residential areas in the “Manifest Destiny” program. This period is known as the “American Frontier” or “Wild / Old West” which also forms the identity of the United States to this day.
The Wild West period is divided into two parts:
1607–1912: territorial expansion
1850–1924: Wild West myths
The second half covering the whole Wild West myth usually takes place in the western part of the United States. In the world of entertainment, this period is often the setting for cowboy conflicts in films, literary works, to video games.
No less interesting than the time settings in other games, here are the 5 best games set in the Wild West to play on PC and consoles according to the Metacritic site.

1. Red Dead Redemption 2
In first place, “Red Dead Redemption” is a game made by Rockstar Games which was released in 2018-2019 for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) XBOX One, PC, and Google Stadia. The third series of Red Dead, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel to Red Dead Redemption (2010).
Set 12 years before the first Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 tells the story of Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van der Linde gang, set in West, Central West, and South America. Arthur’s story has two different endings, depending on how you run the character during the game. Want to be good or bad?
Having an open world environment based on the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE) engine, you can carry out missions, hunt, or interact with in-game characters. Of course, for a more effective firefight, you can activate the Dead Eye mechanism, just tell who the target is, and Arthur will immediately shoot automatically.
Supporting online gaming features, Rockstar also released Red Dead Online in 2019. Despite not winning the Game of the Year award in the year; Red Dead Redemption 2 remains one of the most hype launches and is one of the bestsellers with 34 million copies!
2. Red Dead Redemption
After Red Dead Redemption 2, then “Red Dead Redemption”, the Rockstar game produced in 2010, took place. With the RAGE engine, Red Dead Redemption can indirectly be considered a “sequel” to “Red Dead Revolver”, the game produced by Rockstar in 2004.
Completed from Red Dead Redemption 2, this game is set in 1911 in the Western United States and Mexico. We play the character John Marston, a cowboy who is forced to undergo a murder mission for trying to free his family who is being held captive.
You are free to explore the open world environment in Red Dead Redemption while carrying out missions and behaving good or evil. Just like other Red Dead games, Red Dead Redemption also adopts the Dead Eye mechanism; so you can aim and shoot at your opponent more effectively.
Can be played multiplayer online, you can play Red Dead Redemption with 15 of your friends, either cooperating or competitive. Considered one of the best games in terms of plot, gameplay, and music ever made, Red Dead Redemption arrived on PS3 and XBOX 360, and sold 15 million copies as of 2017!
3. Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath
Developed by Oddworld Inhabitants and distributed by Electronic Arts (EA), “Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath” was first released in 2005 for XBOX. Then, the game will be remastered to PC (via Steam), PS3, and Nintendo Switch in 2020.
Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath tells the adventure of a hitman named Stranger. The unique feature of this game is “live ammunition”. As the name implies, this feature means Stranger loads his weapons with living things with different functions and effects!
Unfortunately, having a unique gameplay and a good story is not enough to save this game. Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath was only able to print 600,000 sales copies as of 2014.
4. Red Steel 2
“Red Steel 2” is a hack-and-slash FPS game developed by Ubisoft, and released exclusively for the Nintendo Wii in 2010. Unfortunately, just like the Wii that was considered a failure; Red Steel 2 was also only able to make 270,000 copies globally. However, that doesn’t mean this game is failing too, you know!
Not completely adapting to the Wild West, the story of Red Steel 2 revolves around an anonymous character who is the last samurai of the Kusagari clan. In accordance with the characteristics of the platform; Red Steel 2 really makes use of the Wii Motion Plus controller as the main character’s sword and gun control.
5. Wild Arms 3
Developed by Media Vision and distributed by Sony Computer Entertainment and Ubisoft; “Wild Arms 3” is a turn-based Japanese RPG (JRPG) game, the 3rd series from Wild Arms that has been running since 1996. Coming to PS2 on 2003, Wild Arms 3 was also available for PS4 via the PlayStation Network (PSN).
Just like Red Steel 2, Wild Arms 3 doesn’t really take place during the Wild West. The story of Wild Arms 3 revolves around an adventurer named Virginia Maxwell, who travels to Filgaia; a desert planet similar to the days of the Wild West. Together with three other adventurers, Virginia must stop the destruction of the planet.
